New York tax rates: progressive brackets (tax year 2025)
New York State uses a progressive income tax. Your taxable income is split across brackets, and each portion is taxed at its bracket rate.
The bracket thresholds depend on filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household). This calculator applies the 2025 schedule for your selection.
Standard deduction and dependent exemption (New York)
New York allows either the standard deduction or an itemized deduction amount (rules and amounts can differ from federal). It also provides a $1,000 dependent exemption per dependent (simplified here as a subtraction from taxable income).
Note: Official IT-201 instructions include tax tables for some lower incomes and a separate “tax computation” method when New York AGI exceeds certain thresholds. This calculator uses the rate schedule for a simplified estimate.
Does New York income tax vary by city?
New York State income tax is statewide, but some localities have additional taxes. The most notable example is New York City resident income tax. Yonkers residents can also face a resident surcharge based on NYS tax.
